Chapter 2 Worksheet
1. Verbal communication is talking by using our words and fillers. This
also involves verbal messages and the interpretation of others. While
non-verbal communication is all the ways we communicate without
using our words. Non-verbal uses body language to communicate with
others.
2. The difference between regulative rules and constitutive rules are that
regulative is when it’s appropriate to talk to someone where
constitutive is more of the physical touch part of things like a hug.
3. Vocalics
4. Proxemics
5. Environment
6. Formality which is the understanding of peoples comfortability. Warmth
is the environment gives off the sense of warmth or welcoming. Privacy
which is like do you like crowded places or not. Familiarity is meeting
new people in a familiar environment or knowing people in a unfamiliar
environment. Constraint refers to your living situation and you are
sharing a room with someone else and they’re invading your personal
space. Then we have distance like knowing how far away a door is or
avoiding eye contact.
7. Kinesics
, 8. Illustrators are used to demonstrate the size of something like how big
a fish you caught was. Affect displays are showing emotion like crying
is a display of sadness. Regulators are making types of hand motion
like asking someone to come over by giving that motion. Adaptors are
motions when we release tension like fidgeting.
1. Regulative rule and constitutive rule are important when
communicating because it allows us to have appropriate conversations
with people. An example of inappropriate communication I have
experienced was communicating with a co-worker about life situations
at work while we were supposed to get tasks done. The communication
was me and it was inappropriate because the conversation should
have taken place at another time outside the work place or during a
lunch break.
2. In a work place if there is something that isn’t true it should be dealt
with immediately. This allows the truth to be told and the people in the
situation can be dealt with appropriately. This can also account for
personal relationships. If you deal with it early on then you are able to
not stress over the situation any longer. The 3 people I spoke to said
the same thing I did and agreed with my point of view.
3. There are different types of codes that go into communication. One of
them is Vocalics. This is how people use their voices to communicate
and express themselves. The 2nd one is proxemics which is how people
create space and distance. The one that best fits me in the workplace
