SRM3 Task 1: Cultural Sensitivity Essay
In a world of different ethnicities, cultures, and languages, cultural sensitivity must
be a priority for every business. I have a four-year-old daughter, and one time, we were at a
grocery store picking up some groceries. A couple in the aisle we were in were speaking
Hindi to one another. As we walked by them, my daughter listened to them talk and
watched them interact. She was intrigued and a little confused. She asked me why they
talked like that because she could not understand them. I used that moment to explain to
her that there are many different languages and cultures and that seeing diversity right
where we are is beautiful. I encouraged her to remain curious about such things. And just
like my four-year-old daughter, sometimes people of all different cultures can think that
their culture is the only one. Or maybe some can even feel their culture is the only one
worth knowing. This is where prioritizing cultural sensitivity is invaluable. It teaches people
to zoom out from what is familiar and consider different perspectives beyond themselves
and their own culture.
First, incorporating cultural sensitivity in a business encourages employees to
recognize the strengths of other cultures. Respect is established when different cultures
