Dashboard Metrics, Benchmarks, and Policy Decisions
In the United States, healthcare workers are five times more likely to be injured by
workplace violence than workers in all other industries (McGuire et al., 2023). Workplace safety
in healthcare, especially in emergency rooms, is a critical issue requiring compliance with
stringent benchmarks established by local, state, and federal regulations. Kaiser Westside, like
other healthcare facilities, is subject to these standards, particularly those set forth in the Safety
from Violence for Healthcare Employees Act (SAVE Act), which aims to minimize violence in
healthcare settings. This report evaluates Kaiser Westside’s compliance with relevant safety
benchmarks, identifies areas needing improvement, and proposes ethical and sustainable actions
to enhance workplace safety.
, Policy Compliance and Healthcare Law Analysis
The SAVE Act, a federal law designed to protect healthcare workers from workplace
violence, sets specific requirements for facilities like Kaiser Westside. The SAVE Act mandates
de-escalation training, incident reporting, and robust security measures (2022). Kaiser Westside
complies with de-escalation training and reporting protocols, demonstrating a commitment to
safety. However, gaps exist in physical security, such as inadequate surveillance and limited
access to panic buttons in high-risk emergency room areas. Addressing these deficiencies is
essential to align with the SAVE Act and state-level regulations. Studies show improved physical
security significantly reduces violence (Oztermeli et al., 2023). Enhancing security will improve
compliance and overall staff safety.
