Childcare presents significant challenges for families in today’s world. Many families, especially
those living in poverty, struggle with the financial burden of paying for childcare. This can lead to
parents being unable to work due to financial constraints, impacting their ability to provide for
their children. Childcare workers face a variety of challenges, including low wages, high teacher-
child ratios, and limited resources. These challenges can be compounded by personal struggles
like food insecurity, eviction, and emotional distress. Some say that the industry devalues
childcare workers, and that wages at fast food restaurants and chain stores are now comparable

As a teacher, these circumstances directly affect my job. When fewer children are in childcare,
the teacher-to-child ratio decreases, resulting in fewer work hours for me. As a mother of four,
providing for my family is a top priority. Additionally, having more children enrolled could
increase the pay and aloud room for growth for the teachers. I would have to say this is a valid
reason why many teachers don’t choose to follow a career in being a teacher when
