SECTION A
QUESTION 1
Briefly describe the circumstances under which a security
official can invoke "private defense." Include an example to
support your explanation.
[5 Marks]
Answer:
Private defense (also known as private protection or self-
defense) occurs when a person uses force to defend
themselves, another person, or property against an unlawful
and immediate threat. A security official can invoke private
defense when:
 The threat is unlawful and not initiated by the defender.
 The threat is imminent or already occurring.
 The response is necessary to prevent harm.
 The degree of force used is proportional to the threat
faced.

, Example:
If a security official at a retail store witnesses an armed
robbery in progress, and the robber threatens to shoot, the
official may use necessary force (such as physical restraint or
defensive tools) to stop the robber and protect lives, provided
the force used does not exceed what is reasonably required.

QUESTION 2
Name and describe the different elements of access control.
Provide an example of each from your work environment.
[10 Marks]

1. Physical Barriers

access to a facility.

to enter restricted areas.
