, QUESTION 1.
Distinguish between leadership and management and identify three examples of the
application of these concepts at Netcare.
Distinguishing Between Leadership and Management:
In modern businesses, leaders and managers are needed to ensure the success and
sustainability of the business. Management is regarded and the broader ‘umbrella’ term. In
management literature, four functions are usually singled out as the main functions of a
manager, namely planning, organising, leading, and controlling.
A manager is appointed in a formal managerial position in a business, fulfilling an important
role in its hierarchy. Therefore, managers need to execute tasks such as budgeting, assigning
tasks and activities to individuals and groups of individuals, and when these tasks are
executed, managers need to control performance to ensure goals and objectives are attained.
Managers also need to manage risks and implement risk management strategies.
To lead, leaders need to have followers. This is the first difference between managers and
leaders. Second, leaders are not appointed in a formal business hierarchy. Leaders are also
responsible for setting directives, aligning their followers with the vision of the business,
motivating, and inspiring their followers.
