1. Introduction
Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most iconic cities, is
renowned for its scenic beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture.
Popular attractions such as Table Mountain, Robben Island, the
Cape Winelands, and the V&A Waterfront make it a top
destination for both domestic and international tourists.
However, like any major tourist destination, Cape Town is
subject to various tourism-related impacts. This report assesses
the sustainability of Cape Town as a tourism destination by
applying a balanced impact analysis as outlined in Learning
Units 5 and 6.

Tourism impacts on a destination area can be classified into
three main categories:
Economic Impacts: Effects on local employment, business
growth, infrastructure development, etc.
Environmental Impacts: Effects on natural resources,
biodiversity, pollution, and waste management.
Socio-cultural Impacts: Effects on local communities,
traditions, lifestyles, and cultural identity.
