, SUSTAINABILITY OF THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN METROPOLITAN AS A
TOURISM DESTINATION
1. INTRODUCTION
The City of Cape Town Metropolitan – renowned globally for its scenic beauty,
rich cultural heritage, and historic significance – has emerged as one of South
Africa’s premier tourism destinations. However, the rapid growth of tourism brings
with it a complex range of impacts that may either bolster or undermine the
sustainability of the destination. This report evaluates the sustainability of Cape
Town as a tourism destination by analyzing the three major types of tourism
impacts: economic, socio-cultural, and environmental. Drawing on insights from
Learning Units 5 and 6, the report applies a balance sheet approach to weigh the
positive and negative consequences of tourism-related activities within Cape
Town. The overall objective is to determine whether the cumulative negative
impacts outweigh the benefits and, consequently, whether Cape Town can be
deemed a sustainable destination.

, 2. OVERVIEW OF TOURISM IMPACTS: THE TRILOGY OF EFFECTS
Tourism impacts on destination areas can be grouped into three main categories,
often referred to as the "trilogy of tourism impacts," as outlined in Learning Units 5
and 6. These include economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts.
Economic impacts relate to employment creation, income generation, local
investments, and broader economic growth stimulated by tourism activities.
Socio-cultural impacts focus on how tourism influences local traditions, heritage
preservation, community identity, and the overall wellbeing of residents.
Environmental impacts refer to the ways in which tourism affects natural
ecosystems, the consumption of resources such as water and land, biodiversity,
and the visual quality of the landscape. Each of these categories carries both
benefits and drawbacks. This report explores how tourism in Cape Town
produces a range of these impacts, analyzing both the positive contributions and
the potential negative consequences that must be managed to ensure the city’s
sustainability as a thriving tourism destination.
3. ECONOMIC IMPACTS
3.1 Positive Economic Contributions
Tourism is a vital component of Cape Town’s economy, contributing significantly
to job creation, GDP growth, and foreign exchange earnings. According to the
City of Cape Town’s Economic Performance Indicators for 2023, the tourism
sector contributed approximately R18.1 billion to the city's GDP, reflecting its
substantial role as an economic driver (City of Cape Town, 2023). The steady
influx of international and domestic tourists fuels a wide array of economic
activities and development initiatives.
Job Creation and Income Generation
Tourism directly supports employment in key sectors such as hospitality,
transportation, entertainment, and retail. In 2022, tourism was responsible for
creating just over 150,000 jobs in Cape Town and the broader Western Cape
region (Wesgro, 2023). These roles range from hotel staff and tour operators to
restaurant workers and travel agents. Additionally, the indirect impact of tourism
