SUSTAINABILITY OF THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN METROPOLITAN AS A TOURISM
DESTINATION

1. INTRODUCTION

The City of Cape Town Metropolitan – renowned globally for its scenic beauty, rich cultural
heritage, and historic significance – has emerged as one of South Africa’s premier tourism
destinations. However, the rapid growth of tourism brings with it a complex range of impacts
that may either bolster or undermine the sustainability of the destination. This report
evaluates the sustainability of Cape Town as a tourism destination by analyzing the three
major types of tourism impacts: economic, socio-cultural, and environmental. Drawing on
insights from Learning Units 5 and 6, the report applies a balance sheet approach to weigh
the positive and negative consequences of tourism-related activities within Cape Town. The
overall objective is to determine whether the cumulative negative impacts outweigh the
benefits and, consequently, whether Cape Town can be deemed a sustainable destination.
