The average newborn is 6-9lb, 19-21in (48-53cm) in length and has a head
circumference of 13-14in (33-35cm). They lose up to 10% of their birth weight in the
first few days of life.
Appearance - lanugo on the skin of the back, cyanosis of hands and feet for the first
24hr, and of protuberant abdomen, as well as a rounded head. Anterior fontanel is
diamond shaped and the posterior fontanel is triangular shaped
- Children are not little adults
- Head-to-toe approach may not work
- Strong assessment skills
- Firm, but caring approach

- Allow child to touch medical equipment
