, Transverse , Longitudinal Waves
·
Waves are repeated vibrations transferring energy
·
Energy is trasferred by parts of the wave knocking nearby parts
·
Two types of waves :
> Transverse
> Longitudinal
Transverse Waves
Definition : Waves where points along its length vibrate perpendicular
to the direction of energy transfer .
The energy transfer is in the same direction as the wave motion
They transfer energy not the particles.
Can move in a solid , liquid , but not a gas .
EM ca move in vacuums.
Peak-highest point above rest position
Trough-lowest point below rest position
Examples : water ripples , S-waves , EM Waves
Longitudinal Waves
Definition : Waves where points along its length vibrate parallel
to the direction of energy transfer
The energy transfer is in the same direction as the wave motion
They transfer energy not the particles.
Can move in a solid , liquid ,
gas.
Cannot move in vacuums.
Compressions- Points close together
Rarefactions-points spaced apart
Examples : sound waves ,
p-waves
