Socioeconomic Status

The American Psychological Association defines socioeconomic status, or SES, as a

person's combined income, educational achievement, professional prominence, and subjective

views of social class and rank. SES can provide information about an individual's possibilities,

quality of life, and psychological consequences. SES may impact a person in a variety of ways

overall. A lower socioeconomic status (SES) is frequently associated with a person's likelihood

of not going to college, their likelihood of experiencing financial hardship or living in poverty,

their likelihood of being in bad health, or their inability to get healthcare. This suggests that a

person's likelihood of having access to or being able to pay to maintain their physical and mental

health is positively correlated with their SES.

Cultural Norms

Cultural norms are the unspoken, unwritten standards and guidelines that members of a

community adhere to. Their views and behaviors are determined by these norms or expectations,

which also determine how individuals relate to the outside world and one another. Cultural

norms can be explicit or tacit, and they differ from culture to culture. Implicit rules can be as

basic as unwritten social conventions, whereas explicit rules might be laws or regulations. Thus,

what is the outcome of incorporating socioeconomic status into cultural norms? Everything is

dependent on one's socioeconomic status. These can vary in many areas of life in the US, such

as employment, way of life, health, and education. Individuals with greater socioeconomic status

(SES) often hold higher-paying occupations that require more schooling. Having said that, those

with higher SES are also better able to afford to send their loved ones and themselves to college.

High SES people can afford to travel and purchase expensive goods or food. Higher SES people

can take care of themselves to keep their bodies healthy and have access to healthcare. Low SES
