According to Chapter 12, Phonics, page 163, the two words that explain the relationship between English sounds and alphabets in relation to spelling are "phonemes" and "graphemes". Phonemes are the smallest units of sound in spoken language, while graphemes are the letters or groups of letters that represent those sounds in written language. In English, approximately 44 phonemes are represented using 26 letters (graphemes), but the relationship is not always consistent.
