ENG1514 Assignment 1 2025 - Due 5 May 2025
ENG1514 ASSIGNMENT 1 2025 5 MAY 2025 INSTRUCTIONS . Read pages 96 to 98 of 2025 Study Guide (Tutorial 501) and Chapter 12 of any edition () of the prescribed text 1.a) Use two words to explain the relationship between English sounds (phonemes)and alphabets (graphemes) in relation to spelling. (2 marks for two correct words and 2 marks for plausible explanation.) According to Chapter 12, Phonics, page 163, the two words that explain the relationship between English sounds and alphabets in relation to spelling are "phonemes" and "graphemes". Phonemes are the smallest units of sound in spoken language, while graphemes are the letters or groups of letters that represent those sounds in written language. In English, approximately 44 phonemes are represented using 26 letters (graphemes), but the relationship is not always consistent. This irregularity means that one phoneme can be represented by several graphemes (e.g., the /ie/ sound can appear as "igh" in light, "y" in my, or "i-e" in like), and one grapheme can represent multiple phonemes depending on context (e.g., the letter "e" in remember). This complex relationship is central to phonics teaching and is key in helping learners decode and spell words effectively.
