Question 1
In everyday speech, the term ‘law’ is used to mean different
things. Explain what ‘the law’ is in its legal sense and
provide examples in your answer. [5]
In its legal sense, the term "law" refers to a system of rules and
regulations that are established and enforced by a governing
authority to maintain order, regulate behavior, and resolve
disputes within a society. The law governs all aspects of social,
political, and economic life, and it can be applied to individuals,
organizations, and the state itself. It ensures that people live in a
structured environment where rights and responsibilities are
defined, and actions are guided by principles of justice and
fairness.
Legal systems typically derive their authority from the
constitution, statutes (laws passed by legislative bodies), case
law (judicial decisions), and common law (traditionally
developed principles). The law is enforced by the courts, police,
and other governmental agencies, with penalties such as fines,
imprisonment, or other forms of sanctions imposed for
violations.
