Assignment C - Part 2.1
Authentic Text
✔ See the class profile on the assignment instructions page to guide your choice of authentic
text.
✔ An authentic text is one produced for proficient speakers of English – not specifically for
English learners.
✔ If you select a written text, it must be 500-700 words long. If you find a text longer than that,
you can shorten it to fit the word count. If shortened, please ensure that it is still fully
coherent.
✔ If you select a listening audio, it must be 4-5 minutes long. If you find an audio longer than
that, you can shorten it to fit the time limit. If shortened, please ensure that it is still fully
coherent.
✔ In this document, provide a copy of the reading text or a transcript of the listening text you
have chosen.
✔ Ensure the text is properly referenced with a working link (URL) to the original source.
Highlight (or list under the text) 12 vocabulary items (words or phrases) which would be
useful to pre-teach.

Extreme Heat Could Kill Millions of People in Europe, Study Warns
By SETH BORENSTEIN/AP January 28, 2025 10:33 AM EST
Extreme temperatures — mostly heat — are projected to kill as many as 2.3 million people in
Europe by the end of the century unless countries get better at reducing carbon pollution and
adapting to hotter conditions, a new study says.
Currently, cold temperatures kill more people in Europe than heat by large margins. But a team
from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine used climate simulations of different
scenarios and looked at death rates in 854 cities. They found as it warms cold deaths lessen
slowly, but heat deaths soar rapidly.
With few reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases and little adaptation like air conditioning
and cooling centers, Italy, southern Spain and Greece should see massive increases in the rate
