Introduction
The African Renaissance is a call for the rebirth and growth of Africa. It means
bringing back African pride, culture, knowledge, and values that were lost or
ignored during colonial times. This idea encourages Africans to believe in
themselves and build a better future based on their own traditions and wisdom
(Diop, 1996). It is about Africans standing up and solving their problems using
their own ideas and ways of thinking.
One big problem in African education today is that it still follows a system brought
by colonial powers. This system often ignores African ways of knowing, African
languages, and African philosophies. This problem is called the "tyranny of
colonialism" because it continues to control how we think and teach, even after
many years of independence (Higgs, 2012). Many African learners are taught
using Western ideas that do not connect with their daily lives or culture. This
makes it hard for them to understand and enjoy learning.
To fix this problem, we need to build a strong African identity in education. This
means using African philosophies like Ubuntu, which teaches that people are
connected, and communality, which focuses on working together as a group.
These values can help learners feel respected, included, and understood in the
classroom (Letseka, 2012).
