A security official can invoke private defense when they are protecting themselves or
others from an unlawful, immediate, and dangerous attack. The response must be
necessary, reasonable, and proportional to the threat faced. Private defense is only
lawful if there are no other means to avoid the danger, and it stops once the threat is
over.
Example:
A security guard is patrolling a mall at night and is suddenly attacked by an armed
intruder trying to steal from a store. If the guard uses reasonable force, such as pepper
spray or a baton, to disarm or stop the attacker and protect themselves, it would be
considered private defense.
