1.1 Define environmental education as proposed by the IUCN. (4 marks)
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), environmental
education is "a process of recognising values and clarifying concepts in order to develop
skills and attitudes necessary to understand and appreciate the interrelatedness among
human beings, their culture, and their biophysical surroundings." It involves practice in
decision-making and self-formulation of a code of behaviour about issues concerning
environmental quality.

1.2 Explain the shift from nature studies to environmental education. (4 marks)
Initially, education focused on nature studies, emphasizing observation and
appreciation of flora and fauna. However, due to rising environmental problems, a shift
occurred toward environmental education, which takes a more comprehensive
approach. It includes understanding ecological systems, human-environment
interactions, and fostering attitudes and actions that promote environmental
sustainability. This shift also incorporates social, economic, and political dimensions of
environmental issues.

1.3 Describe the holistic environment and its components as outlined in the study
