What does Eva Smith change her name to when she meets Gerald? - ✔✔Daisy Renton
How does Eric act towards Eva when he goes with her to her lodgings? - ✔✔He acts
nastily, insists on going in and "threatens to make a row."
What evidence does Gerald have for thinking of that Eva Smith may have been more
than one person? - ✔✔Because no girl had been brought into the infirmary, having
drunk disinfectant, in order to commit suicide. The photograph, also, and the fact that
the Inspector was not a police officer, is what makes Gerald want to investigate. "We've
no proof it was the same photograph and therefore no proof it was the same girl."
Why is Birling wrong when he says Gerald and Sheila will be marrying at a good time?
- ✔✔Because even though the miners are on strike, and there is talk about potential

What did the workers at Birling's company want their rates raised to? - ✔✔25 shillings a
week (from about "twenty-two and six").

, What does 'provincial in speech' mean? - ✔✔
Why does the doorbell (signifying the Inspector's arrival) ring at the precise moment it

enters the scene. Also, in the dialogue, which the doorbell interrupts, Mr. Birling is
dismissing the idea of community and socialism. This is ironic because the Inspector is
all about helping others, and is very much a socialist throughout, whereas Birling is a
capitalist. This shows their conflict between them also.
How is Eric described in the opening stage directions? - ✔✔"Eric is in his early twenties,
not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive.". Assertive means confident, and so it is like
Eric is half confident, but also half timid too because, I think, he feels a pressure to say
and to not say certain things when his father is present. And so half the time, he comes
out with it, like "My God!", and other times he keeps it hidden, "(As ERIC does not
reply)".
Why is Birling wrong when he says Russia will 'always be behind naturally'? -
✔✔Because in 1917, Russia had a revolution which then modernised them and moved
them forward to be like other countries.
How many 'Eva Smiths and John Smiths' does the Inspector say there are? - ✔✔"But
there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left
with us,".

✔✔Cold. ("His wife is about fifty, a rather cold woman and her husband's social
superior."
