The Psychology of Procrastination

Introduction

Intentionally putting off an activity with the knowledge that it will be more detrimental to

the self in the future is a common occurrence in man. It impacts school, homework, professional

performance, and other individual pursuits and dreams. The problem is evident when students

fail to prepare for exams or do not write necessary papers on time, employees must complete

their work on time, or a person delays personal tasks or exercises. Procrastination is evident in

the current society, making the subject more critical due to its effects on productivity, stress

levels, and, as a result, poor health. It is essential to know how procrastination works and what

effects it has in order to come up with ways to reduce its detrimental effects better (Quintero &

Willett, 2022). I selected procrastination from personal experiences and knowledge as this issue

affects society and needs to be researched on top of the causes and impacts. Understanding

procrastination is a significant academic interest because it improves comprehension of people

and their behaviors and can offer ways to increase productivity and improve one’s mental health.

However, it should be noted that procrastination is a global problem that concerns all age groups

and does not depend on people's nationality or occupation, which adds to its relevance in

psychological research. Its effects on productivity and the mental well-being of the affected

individuals reinforce the idea of exploring this topic to uncover information that can be useful to

the community and society.
