Question 1 Read the extract below and answer the following questions:
When educators get together to talk about their work, the conversation
inevitably comes round to the learners they are teaching – their habits, the
challenges they are facing, and the challenges they pose as learners. One of
the best resources on this topic is the video by Michael Wesch, a cultural
anthropologist at Kansas State University. In this video (Wesch 2007),
Michael asked his students a simple question: “What is it like being a student
today?” Student responses – at once provocative and disturbing – say a lot
about the current generation of college and university students and how
educators can create environments that would help them learn. Students
seem to feel that they are not being taught in the ways best suited to help
them achieve deep, meaningful learning. They seek engagement and
connection…” 1.1 Mention and describe five characteristics of the millennial
generation learners. (10)

Millennial generation learners, also known as Generation Y (born between approximately 1981
and 1996), exhibit several key characteristics that influence their learning preferences and
behavior in educational settings. Here are five characteristics of millennial learners:

1. Tech-Savvy (Digitally Native)

Millennials grew up in the digital era and are comfortable using technology for learning and
communication. They prefer interactive and multimedia-based learning methods, such as videos,
podcasts, and online discussions, rather than traditional lecture-based approaches.

2. Desire for Engagement and Collaboration

Millennial learners prefer active learning environments that encourage participation, discussion,
and group collaboration. They thrive in team-based projects, peer discussions, and interactive
classroom experiences rather than passive learning.

3. Short Attention Span and Preference for Instant Gratification

Due to their exposure to fast-paced digital media, millennials tend to have shorter attention spans
and expect quick feedback. They prefer concise, visually engaging content and may struggle
with long, monotonous lectures.
