Seven Principles of Universal Design. Give an example of each from the IU campus or
Bloomington area, explain why each is a good example its respective principle. - ✅✅1.
Equitable Use: The elevators in Wells Library can be used the same way by anyone.
There is no obstruction through the doorway that would impede wheelchair use, there
are raised numbers next to the buttons to indicate the floor selection for the visually
impaired, and low physical effort for someone who has a limited range of motion.
2. Flexibility of Use: room signage in Kirkwood Hall that features high-contrast, raised
lettering, as well as braille for all sight impairments.
3. Simple, Intuitive Use: a light switch, which features a basic toggle to operate, and has
a standard design of up/on down/off motion.
4. Perceptible Information: bathroom signage iconography in Kirkwood Hall implies who
is meant to use the space (male, female, or any gender).
5. Tolerance for Error: an automatic save button on a laptop, which takes the
responsibility of remembering to save a document from the user.
6. Low Physical Effort: automatic doors at Wells Library do not require any physical
effort from the user, aside from moving through the doorway.
7. Size and Space for Approach and Use: ramps in front of the Health Center have
adequate space accommodating the incline of the ramp and the turn radius for changes
in direction of the ramp.

people.
3 features you would look for in an ergonomically designed task chair: - ✅✅1.
Adjustable lumbar support
2. Adjustable seat pan depth
3. Adjustable seat height
Give an example of an affordance, constraint, and natural mapping and explain why
they are good examples. - ✅✅1. Affordance: a pushbar on an egress door is a good
example because the push motion allows for use of the door, even if the user is being
pushed against the door.
