D253 - TASK 1: Becoming an Effective Values-Based Leader
A. Complete the VIA Character Strengths Survey using the “VIA Character
Strengths Survey” web link, and use the results of the survey to complete the
following:
1. Describe an experience in which you used one of your five signature strengths
(i.e., the first five) from the survey results to overcome a challenge.
, Love of Learning- My love of learning has truly been the driving force behind
my journey. After leaving the military on January 22, 2022, I found myself at a
crossroads, unsure of what I wanted to do and without a degree to guide me. I
took a security job at the Department of State, a position I appreciated for its
stability but often resented for its monotony, spending 12-hour shifts
checking IDs left me feeling unproductive and unfulfilled. Determined to find
a new path, I discovered a veteran tech program about a year into the job. I
made the difficult decision to go part-time so I could fully immerse myself in a
three-month course on Tech and IT, where I earned my first certifications and
discovered a passion for technology. Shortly after, I accepted a contract
supporting the FBI as an IT specialist. Though the pay was lower, I loved the
work and continued to nurture my curiosity by learning from others around
me. My eagerness to learn eventually led me to a coworker on the
deployment team for a business unit. After helping with his onboarding and
expressing interest in his role, he recommended me for an open position. I
landed the job, doubling my income within six months. Today, I’m pursuing a
degree in Business Information Technology Management, driven by the same
love of learning that has propelled me forward, excited to continue growing
and advancing in the tech industry.
a. Explain how you could apply the strength identified in part A1 as a
values-based leader in your new position as the customer service
manager from the scenario.
As a customer service manager, I would apply my love of learning to
inspire and develop my team. My journey has taught me the importance of
growth, adaptability, and seeking out opportunities to improve, and I
would bring that same mindset into my leadership. I believe in creating an
environment where curiosity and continuous improvement are
encouraged, whether through providing training opportunities, mentoring
team members, or fostering open communication.
Just as I’ve always taken the initiative to learn from others and build
relationships, I would use that skill to connect with my team, understand
and help
their strengths and them
areasreach their full potential. I know
