The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas was originally a book written by John Boyne
in 2006. Mark Herman then wrote and directed the movie in 2008. I would
say the movie and the book are classics, as they’re both unforgettable works
of art. In the movie, some scenes are very bright and colorful, and that
represents the boy's friendships in the movie. Even though it was a dark
situation, their relationship shined through. The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas
is a drama based around the holocaust war. Showing the horrors of the
Holocaust seen through the eyes of the two boys.

Bruno is the main character; he’s a young German boy who moves with his
family to Auschwitz, where his father becomes the commandant of a
concentration camp. Through his innocent and naive perspective, the
audience is shown the harsh reality of life inside the camp and the abuse
committed against Jewish people. Bruno soon develops a friendship with a
young boy inside this concentration camp. Bruno becomes disconnected
from his father's work and Nazi beliefs as their friendship grows. He starts
questioning why the camp exists and why people like Shmuel (the other boy)
are treated so poorly. Despite the risks, Bruno decides to sneak into the
camp to spend time with his friend, Shmuel. The movie takes a tragic turn
when Bruno agrees to help Shmuel find his missing father. The two boys
wear striped pajamas and sneak into the camp, where they are put into a
gas chamber with other prisoners of the camp and killed. The final scene
shows the impact of their deaths on both families, as Bruno's mother realizes
the horror of her husband's work, and Shmuel's father is devastated by his
son's loss. Camera and sound techniques of either upbeat sounds or bright
scenes are used to show the joy of the boy’s friendships.

A Word on Critical Viewing:
1. Complex inner lives; both the boys in the movie are living in such a crazy
time dealing with a cataphoric war and not truly understanding the situation
at hand
2. Style of Video: The videography was nice to view, utilizing colorful visuals
and shots
3. Respected Audience: The Boy in the Stripe Pajamas is a hard story to tell
due to the time and history it discusses. Although fictional, the movie
educates viewers about what a hard time in WWII was.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas shares a powerful message about the
devastating effects of war and the importance of empathy and
understanding. An article by The Harvard Crimson describes this well,
stating, “The most salient aspect of the film is the way it contrasts youth,
innocence, and friendship with the violence of the Holocaust.” (Buren Para.
5)
It shows how hatred can lead to terrible acts of violence and injustice, as
exemplified by the crimes committed during the Holocaust. This type of art is
a great expression that, just by viewing, you can glimpse what that time
