In this assignment, you are required to contextualise your research
problem and topic. As we said above, you will choose either option 1,
option 2 or option 3 as your research focus for the year. This means that
you must describe the overall (broad) context in which your
topic/problem arises. Explain some of the related debates and some of
the historical, social or political contexts of your topic. You must
demonstrate that you are able to situate your topic within a particular
context (a particular field of study, culture, environment, place, political
discourse and at a particular time in history). In other words, you must
provide the background to your topic. This is how you will introduce
your study and explain why your research is important and relevant. You
should also be able to describe how your topic is relevant to the
academic field of communication studies.
Then you must explain your research problem and your objectives. Why
is your particular research problem a problem at all? How do you aim
to resolve it, and why? What do you aim to do in your study and what

In order to complete this assignment successfully, you will need to
demonstrate that you have already done quite a lot of reading on your
