Week 1: A discourse perspective on communication
In a nutshell:
Text = sequence of sentences or utterances
Discourse = a sequence of sentences or utterances serving a communicative purpose.
Jakobsen classifications based on text functions:
- Referential = most important function. Reference to something in the world
- Emotive = the attitude of the addresser
- Conative = the orientation towards the addressee. E.g. giving command or
instruction, make the receiver perform an action
- Poetic = focused on the message itself. Language should sound nice.
- Phatic = language is being used for checking the channel or making contact as in
the case of small talk. E.g. ‘’Hey are you still there?”
- Metalingual = language focuses on the code itself. E.g. “I don’t follow you’ or ‘Am I
understood?’
Werlich’s classification based on text forms:
Labov’s story structure:
Function = goals (instructive, to inform)
Form = to reach the goal with certain linguistic forms (stepwise, imperative)
Three functions of language point to three main discourse types:
1. Informative – information
2. Narrative – expression
3. Argumentative – persuasion
