Organisational Communication Theory
Interactive Communication Technologies and the Organisational Environment
1. Introduction
The contemporary organisational environment is undergoing significant transformations
due to technological advancements, globalisation, and shifting communication
paradigms. One of the key contributors to this change is the advent of Web 2.0
technologies, which have facilitated a collaborative turn, bringing about various
paradigmatic shifts in communication. This assignment explores these shifts within the
framework of the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment and
discusses how organisations can develop agility to adapt to these changes.
2. The Contemporary Organisational Environment: The VUCA Context
The modern organisational environment is characterised by VUCA—volatility,
uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (Bennett & Lemoine, 2014).
Volatility refers to the unpredictable and rapid changes in market conditions,
technological advancements, and consumer behavior.
Uncertainty denotes the lack of clarity in forecasting future trends due to shifting
economic, political, and technological landscapes.
Complexity arises from interconnected global markets, diverse stakeholder
interests, and the proliferation of digital platforms.
