Biology 109 Exam 2 2024/2025 Exam
Questions Marking Scheme New Update

Mitosis - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔cell division for growth, replacement, repair, and
asexual production, normally to increase the amount of cells in a body.
Starts with a single cell and splits into 2 diploids. Occurs in somatic cells.
Daughter cells are all clones of the mother cell.
Meiosis - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔Cell division that produces reproductive cells in
sexually reproducing organisms usually to produce offspring. Starts with
one cell to produce 4 2n's. Occurs in germ cells in the testes or ovaries.
Daughter cells are all variants. 2n = 4
Interphase - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔When the cell is doing normal function and not
dividing
G1 - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔The part of interphase just after mitosis where
organelles are replaced

, Prophase - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔Chromosomes form and nucleus dissolves,
Centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell, centrioles split to form spindle
fibers, crossing over may occur. First stage of mitosis.
Metaphase - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔Spindle fibers attach to each chromosome by
the centrimere. Chromosome pairs (tetrad) line up along the m--- plate.
Second stage of mitosis.
Anaphase - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔Spindle fibers shorten. Chromosomes separate
and are pulled to opposite sides, centrioles split to form spindle fibers. Third
stage of mitosis.
Telophase - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔The cell membrane will pinch inward until two
cells are formed, the nucleus reforms, and chromosomes break down into
chromatin. Final stage of mitosis.
Prophase 1 - 🧠ANSWER ✔✔Chromosomes form and nucleus dissolves,
centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell, centrioles split to form spindle
fibers, crossing over MAY occur to form homologous chromosome pairs.
They'll only exchange if they're the same pair. First stage of meiosis.
