ARP - ANS-an internet protocol that takes an IP address in an IP datagram and
translates it into the appropriate CSMA/CD address for delivery oon a LAN.
ARPANET - ANS-One of the country's first wide area packet-switched networks, the
precursor of the modern Internet
blog - ANS-short for Web log. An online Web site in the form of a journal.
cookie - ANS-data created by a Web server that is stored on the hard drive of a user's
workstation.
datagram - ANS-the entity or packet of data transmitted in a datagram packet-switched
network
domain name - ANS-the address that identifies a particular site on the Web.
Domain Name System (DNS) - ANS-A large, distributed database of Internet addresses
and domain names.
DHCP - ANS-An Internet protocol that dynamically assigns Internet addresses to
workstations as they request a connection to the Internet.
e-commerce - ANS-the term that has come to represent the commercial dealings of a
business using the Internet.
electronic data interchange (EDI) - ANS-The processing of business orders, purchases,
and payments using only electronic data transfers.
e-mail - ANS-the computerized version of writing a letter and mailing it at the local post
office.
ENUM - ANS-The Voice over IP standard that converts a telephone number into a fully
qualified Internet address.
e-retailing - ANS-the selling of goods and services over the Internet.
, extranet - ANS-when an intranet is extended outside the corporate walls and made
available to suppliers, customers, or other external agents.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) - ANS-One of the first services offered on the Internet,
FTP's primary functions are to allow a user to download a file from a remote site to his
or her computer, and to uploads a file from his or her computer to a remote site.
H.323 - ANS-a Voice over IP standard that will probably be replaced by Session
Initiation Protocol
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) - ANS-A set of codes inserted into a document
that is used by a Web browser to determine how the document is displayed.
HTTP - ANS-An Internet protocol that allows Web browsers and servers to send and
receive WWW pages.
instant messaging (IM) - ANS-the sending and receiving of text messages between user
workstations in real time.
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) - ANS-used by routers and nodes, this
protocol performs error reporting for the Internet Protocol
Internet Protocol (IP) - ANS-the software that prepares a packet of data so that it can
move from one network to another on the Internet or within a set of networks in a
corporation.
Internet2 - ANS-A newer, very-high-speed packet-switched wide area network that
supplements the currently existing Internet and may eventually replace it.
intranet - ANS-A TCP/IP network inside a company that allows employees to access the
company's information resources through an Internet-like interface.
IP multicasting - ANS-the ability of a network server to transmit a data stream to more
than one host at a time.
IPSec - ANS-A set of protocols, created by the Internet Engineering Task Force, that
can provide for secure transmission using the Internet Protocol.
IPv6 - ANS-a more modern Internet protocol that takes advantage of the current
technology.
