Intro to Networking: Chapter 3
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol ) - ANS-Uses a three-step process called a three way
handshake to establish a connection
Checksum - ANS-A character of string sent by TCP
Sequence Number - ANS-A chronological order sent by TCP to reorder segments as they arrive
Flow Control - ANS-Process of gauging the appropriate rate of transmission based on how
quickly recipient can receive the data
UDP (User Data Protocol) - ANS-Provides no error checking or sequencing
IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) - ANS-Manages multicasting at the Network layer
of the OSI Model
ARP Table - ANS-Database of IP-to-MAC address mappings kept on a computer's hardrive
Dynamic ARP Table Entries - ANS-Created when a client makes an ARP request that cant be
satisfied by data already in the ARP table
Static ARP Table Entries - ANS-Entered manually by using ARP utility to obtain information from
as well as manipulating a devices table
Interior Routers - ANS-Directs data between networks within the same autonomous system
Autonomous System - ANS-Group of networks on the same domain that are operated by the
same organization
Border Routers - ANS-Connects an autonomous system with an outside network
Exterior Routers - ANS-Directs data between autonomous systems
Layer 3 Switch - ANS-Faster, Cheaper switch designed to work on large LANS supporting the
same routing protocols and decisions
Layer 4 Switch - ANS-Operates anywhere between layer 4 and 7 and are known as the content,
or application switches
