Experiment 1
Title: Determination of ascorbic acid content in vitamin C tablets
Aim: Calculating the mass percentage of ascorbic acid in the vitamin C tablet, by requirin
volume of N-bromosuccinimide from titration with a certain amount of vitamin C dissolve
deionised water.
Procedure: Please refer to CHEM151 Laboratory Manual page 24.
Result:
Experiment Volume of Beurette Reading (ml) Volume of
vitamin C (ml) NBS (ml)
Final Initial
Trial 25 23.1 0 23.1
1 25 47.3 23.1 24.2
2 25 22.8 0 22.8
3 25 39.0 22.8 16.2
average (24.2 x 22.8 x 16.2 ) = 21.1 21.1
Calculations:
176.13 g/mol = molar mass of ascorbic acid
1.Mass of ascorbic acid during titration
= 176.13 x 0.01 x (21.1/1000)
= 0.037 g = 37 mg
2.Mass of ascorbic acid in vitamin C
=37g x 10
= 370 mg
3.Mass of vitamin C
=1.13 x 1000 = 1130 mg
