Disenfranchised Greif:
- Greif that cannot be openly acknowledged
- Ex. You cannot openly talk about same sex marriage or losing the relationship with
another man that isn’t your husband
- It is more complex than the normal grieving process
Complicated grieving:
- No reaction at all or not really proportional to what they “normally” should be feeling.
- Any other previous psychiatric diagnosis’s will make this complicated
- Can become a psychotic episode
- Unhealthy relationship
- Losing a child or a spouse
- Risk factors:
o Immunocompromised (not eating or drinking)
Cognitive, emotional, spiritual, behavioral, and physiological are all assessed with grieving
3 Critical components:
Perception: how are they coping and what can help?
Support: who is their support system and
Coping: ways to cope
Care for the grieving patients:
Anticipated vs. actual loss- pros and cons to each
Help develop plan for coping with loss- what will be best for them?
Encourage professional help as needed- nothing is wrong with this!
Self-awareness inventory
Ongoing self-evaluation- before you can help you need to mentally be aware
Mood Disorders (Affective disorders)
Mania
Depression
Major depressive disorder:
, Bipolar disorder
- Bipolar 1: 1 manic or mixed episode usually more than 1
- Bipolar 2: 1 if not more depressive episode with a hypomanic episode
- Hypomanic is when you can function normally but not quite their normal (more energy
than usual)
Persistent depressive disorder
Cyclothymic disorder is high functioning PMS which can affect work but more of relationships
Postpartum
- blues- meh normal
- Depressive- you need help
- Psychosis- trying to hurt the baby or hurting the mother or baby
Self-injury
- Attention or to fit in, could be a punishment
- Alleviates negative emotions and escape from responsibility
Biologic Theories:
- Genetics plays a little bit of a role, yes
- Frist degree relative is at twice the risk though, same with bipolar but 10 times the risk
o Serotonin- mood, activity levels, irritability, and pain
o Epinephrine
- Psychodynamic theories
o Not all on the parents

Hamilton rating scale for depression:
- Reliable tool used to see signs and symptoms of depression
o Depressed mood
o Guilt
o Loss of interest
o Retardation (Slowing down and such
