For AS French Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing, focus on the following key areas:
1. Listening Section:
Focus on Key Information: Practice identifying main ideas, details, and specific information from spoken
French texts. Key areas include conversations, interviews, news reports, and discussions on various
topics.
Listening for Opinion and Tone: Pay attention to the tone, mood, and opinions expressed by speakers.
This can often help you understand the underlying message or stance in the audio.
Common Topics: Familiarize yourself with common themes, such as family, relationships, education,
youth culture, environmental issues, and social problems.
2. Reading Section:
Skimming and Scanning: Practice skimming for general meaning and scanning for specific details. Make
sure you can quickly locate the required information within reading passages.
Understanding Context: Pay attention to context, such as cultural references, idiomatic expressions, and
the overall tone of the passage.
Text Types: Be familiar with a variety of texts such as articles, blogs, advertisements, emails, and
extracts from books.
Vocabulary and Grammar: Focus on understanding a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures,
including tenses, gender agreements, and adjective placement.
3. Writing Section:
Structured Responses: Practice writing essays or short answers in French. Focus on clear structure,
such as an introduction, development, and conclusion.
Expressing Opinions: Be prepared to express and justify your opinions on topics like technology, family,
traditions, and current social issues.
Use of Complex Structures: Incorporate a variety of tenses (present, past, future) and grammatical
structures (conditional, subjunctive, etc.) to show linguistic proficiency.
Cultural Knowledge: Demonstrate awareness of French culture and society in your writing. This might
include references to French history, politics, or contemporary issues.
4. Exam Strategy:
Practice Listening and Reading Comprehension: Regularly practice past papers and online resources
to improve your speed and accuracy in both listening and reading.
Time Management: Practice answering questions within the time limits. For writing, plan your response
before writing to ensure you stay focused and organized.
