QUESTION 1
(a) The Notion of "Social Contract" (4 marks)
The social contract is a philosophical concept that
describes an implicit agreement among individuals
in a society to form and abide by a system of
governance. It suggests that people surrender some
of their natural freedoms in exchange for the
protection of rights, order, and stability provided
by the state.

, Thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke,
and Jean-Jacques Rousseau contributed to this
theory, each with differing views on the balance
between authority and individual liberty. The
social contract underpins modern democracy,
emphasizing that government legitimacy derives
from the consent of the governed.

(b) "Banking Education" (4 marks)
The concept of "banking education" was
introduced by Paulo Freire in his work Pedagogy
of the Oppressed. It refers to a traditional, passive
learning model where students are seen as empty
vessels into which teachers deposit knowledge. In
this system:

Students are not encouraged to think critically but
merely memorize and regurgitate information.
Education is authoritarian, with teachers having
absolute control over knowledge transmission.
