Quiz Essential Microbiology Portage Learning
Title: Introduction to Medical Microbiology
Objective:
- Cultivation of lab samples (growth conditions you need to have in order
to study pathogens in the lab)
- Equipment used to cultivate bacteria
- Identification of samples (biochemical assays)
- Going about how you actually would in a lab setting, looking and
determining what kind of bacteria or pathogen a patient may have
- Tests available to get to these ends
- Evaluation of samples (microscopy)
- Visualization and recognition of key characteristics of each pathogens
Procedure:
- Work in a sterile environment, using an autoclave at 125 degrees C
- Growing
- Fixed incubator at 37 degrees C
- Shaker at 37 degrees C
- Visualizing
- Microscopy
- Storing it
- Storing in a refrigerator at 4 degrees C
- Never eat or drink in lab
- Contamination risks
- Use PPE
- Latex or thermal gloves (application dependent)
- Gloves for cold and heat
- Eyewear protection
- Lab coat
- For chemicals when there is a risk of getting them spilled on you - Never
leave the lab while wearing PPE
- Public hallway
- Bathroom
- Cafeteria
Notes:
- An autoclave is not just dry air, so we need to look at the differences
between trying to achieve a sterile environment by just dry heat versus
actual steam
- Steam is more efficient compared to dry heat (minutes vs hours)
