PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
-Commonly used tocolytic -Resolution of preclampsia or eclampsia
-Plays an important role in neurotransmission and -Suppresses contractions by relaxing the smooth
muscular excitability muscle of the uterus inhibiting uterine activity
Complications Medication Administration
-Drowsiness, decreased respiratory rate, arrhythmias, -For eclampsia/pre-eclampsia:
bradycardia, IV or IM
hypotension, diarrhea, muscle weakness, flushing, -Not to exceed 40 g/day
sweating, hypothermia
Contraindications/Precautions
-Contraindications: active vaginal bleeding, dilation of the cervix greater
than 6 cm, chorioamnionitis, greater than 34 weeks of gestation, acute
fetal distress Nursing Interventions
-Precautions: renal insufficiency, using for more than 5-7 days for preterm
labor (increased risk of hypocalcemia and bone changes in newborn -Monitor client closely
-Discontinue if exhibiting signs of pulmonary
edema (CP, SOB, respiratory distress,
wheezing/crackles, productive blood-tinged
cough)
-Monitor for signs of toxicity (loss of deep
tendon reflexes, urinary output less than 30
Interactions mL/hr, respiratory depression less than 12/
min, pulmonary edema, chest pain
-May potentiate calcium channel blockers and -Administer calcium gluconate or calcium
chloride as antidote for toxicity
