The past couple of years the government has tried to improve the quality of the favelas. They
have done this with site and services schemes that provide land for people to build on
Positives and negatives of the governments interference of the Favelas
Positives:
Sanitation is improved, access to clean water and sewers
There has been a cable car installed so the residents now have easy access to the center
of the city
New healthcare, leisure, and education facilities have been implicated
Credit for home improvements has become available with 100% mortgages
There has been an introduction of the presence of police forces (Pacifying Police Unit)
which has reduced crime and built a sense of safety within the favelas
Negatives:
The budget was $1 Billion which is not enough to cover all the Favelas in Rio
The infrastructure is not maintained properly so many of the services fall into disrepair
The residents within the Favelas do not possess the abilities to properly maintain the
infrastructures anyway
The illiterate and unemployment rates still need great attention to them
The rent increases as a result of all of it, leaving the poor residents in a far worse place
than they were before
The United Nations have recognized the success of the scheme and it was been used in other
Brazilian cities as a result
Overall the residents have improved access to services and quality of life
The problems that are present are slowly being addressed and taken care of
