Week 4 Discussion: Client-Centered Care Initiatives
Advanced practice nurses apply continuous quality improvement (CQI) processes to improve
client-centered outcomes. Select one of the following client-centered care initiatives that you
would like to improve in your practice area: client feedback, client/family engagement, or care
coordination during care transitions, or specialty consultations for clients.
Include the following sections:
Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
a. Identify the selected client-centered care initiative and describe its application to
your practice area.
b. Select one CQI framework that can be applied to the selected initiative. Explain
each step of the framework.
c. Describe how the framework can improve client-centered care for the selected
initiative.
d. Describe how you would involve interprofessional team members in the CQI
process.
Hello class and Professor,
The client-centered care initiative I selected is client/family engagement. In my current position
in the emergency department, our patient satisfaction is the lowest among all the departments in
the hospital. Patients have also ranked the emergency department as the lowest scoring for nurse-
to-patient interaction and experience. An initiative that I am currently involved in to combat this
issue is by initiating bedside report within my department. Bedside report will allow nurses to
not only make sure patients are in a safe standing at the start and end of their shift but will also
allow patients to vocalize concerns during handoff; This will result in improved patient
experience scores (O’Dennell, 2023). Bedside handoff “allows for communication between staff
and the patient without distractions while alleviating any miscommunications” (Kiaser, 2024).
One CQI framework that can be applied to this initiative is the Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA)
framework. The plan of this initiative is to improve overall patient experience scores. During the
implementation phase, we will initiate bedside report through the unit and get both day and night
shifts involved to provide consistency to patients. After the implementation process, data is
recollected and studied to check if there was any improvement. Lastly, if the issue is resolved,
