The class license you will need is based on... - ANSWER ...the gross vehicle weight
rating (GVWR) or gross vehicle weight (GVW).
Class A Commercial Driver License - ANSWER Type of License necessary for the
operation of tractor trailers or any truck or trailer with a COMBINED weight of 26,001 or
more, provided the weight of the vehicle towed is MORE than 10,000 pounds
Class B Commercial Driver License - ANSWER Type of License necessary for the
operation of any vehicle with a weight of 26,001 or more, provided the weight of the
vehicle towed is LESS than 10,000 pounds
Class C Commercial Driver License - ANSWER Type of License necessary for the
operation of any vehicle with a weight of Less than 26,001 pounds, also used to
transport hazardous material
Class D Non-Commercial Driver License - ANSWER Allows you to drive non-
commercial passenger
vehicles, such as cars and trucks, which DO NOT exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle
weight. With a Class D driver's license, you may also operate a three-wheel vehicle
(excluding a two-wheel motorcycle with a sidecar).
Class E Non-Commercial Driver License - ANSWER Allows you to operate non-
commercial, single
unit vehicles that exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Examples of Class E
vehicles include trucks and motor homes. With a Class E driver's license, you may also
operate a three-wheel vehicle (excluding a two-wheel
motorcycle with a side car)
Driver's license Rules - ANSWER Each qualified driver will have only one driver's
license, endorsed for one or more of the classifications. It is illegal to have more than
one valid driver's license. If you drive a motorcycle and another type of vehicle, your
license will be endorsed for two classifications, after completion of driving tests for both
