Role and Function of MPOETC - ANSWER comprised of 20 members appointed by Governor.
Designated to terms of 3 years. It was established in 1974 to set minimum training standards for
officer municipal police departments. It is comprised of 1 chairman and 19 additional members
for a total of 20.
Certification - ANSWER Is good for two (2) years
Decertification - ANSWER Conviction of Misdemeanors one or two and All felonies are grounds
to be decertified
In-Service credit hours - ANSWER 12 in-service credit courses each year
4 Learning Skills - ANSWER Active Listening (comprehend+understand the message), Participate
(in the academy, Policing is not a bystander crowd participation increases your attentiveness
and senses), Take Notes (huge portion of training and out on streets), and Think Critically (learn
to think critically when making decisions)
Think Critically - ANSWER The critical thinker can explain+defend a reasonable position, draw
conclusions when warranted but with caution, and acknowledge what they don't know & seek
answers. Speaking requires more thought than listening.

Sir Robert Peel's 2nd Principle - ANSWER The ability of the police to perform their duties is
dependent on public approval of police actions.

public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the

secured diminishes proportionately with the necessity of the use of physical force.
