Task 1.Share 2 experiences when language barriers or
differences influenced how you communicated with others and
how it helped you appreciate the importance of understanding
cultural diversity. (6)

Task 1: Sharing 2 Experiences of Language Barriers or
Differences
Experience 1: Working with a Multinational Team in an
International Project
Context:
A few years ago, I worked on a project with a multinational
team in a corporate setting. The project involved collaborators
from several countries, including India, China, the United States,
and South Africa. Each team member had a different native
language, and English was the common language used for
communication.
Language Barrier:
Despite English being the shared language, the diversity in
accents, speech patterns, and understanding of certain
terminologies created confusion. For example, a colleague from
China would often use direct translations of certain phrases that
didn’t quite make sense in English, and a colleague from India
would use regional slang or idiomatic expressions that were
unfamiliar to many of us.

, How It Affected Communication:
These differences sometimes led to misinterpretations. One
example was when discussing deadlines for a deliverable. The
team from India mentioned that they "would get it done soon,"
which was understood differently by the team from the US,
where "soon" typically means within the next few hours or a
day, but in India, it meant a longer timeframe.
Impact and Appreciation of Cultural Diversity:
This experience taught me the importance of being clear and
asking for clarification when working with teams that speak
different languages or dialects. It also helped me appreciate the
value of active listening and patience. I learned that even in a
shared language like English, it's essential to consider the
cultural context behind the words being used. Understanding
how different cultures approach time, communication styles, and
decision-making helped me develop a deeper appreciation for
cultural diversity and the need for patience and flexibility in
communication.

Experience 2: Volunteering in a Refugee Camp
Context:
While volunteering at a refugee camp in a multicultural urban
area, I interacted with refugees from various parts of the world,
including the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Eastern
Europe. Many of the refugees did not speak fluent English, and
the common languages spoken in the camp were Arabic, French,
and a variety of African dialects.
