Question 1 [20]
1.1. What are mycorrhizae, and how do they assist a plant in the uptake of nutrient
elements? (5)
Mycorrhizae are symbiotic associations between fungi and plant roots. They help
plants absorb nutrients, especially phosphorus and nitrogen, by increasing the
surface area for nutrient uptake. The fungal hyphae extend far into the soil, accessing
nutrients beyond the root zone. In exchange, the plant provides the fungi with
carbohydrates produced during photosynthesis.
