Analyzing Bias, Cultural Awareness, and Ethics in a Case Study
A. Select one of the attached case studies (“Case Study A: Pao and Gender Bias.” )
1. Identify an example of each type of bias (implicit and explicit) that is evident in
the case study.
The implicit bias was that men with similar profiles and achievements were
promoted instead of Pao.
The explicit bias was that the senior partner asked Pao and a coworker to
develop ways to improve the firm‘s treatment of women and did not follow through
or care.
a. Explain why the bias is implicit or explicit.
Implicit bias is unconscious and unaware that it exists. It can affect
decisions even if not meant to. Pao has the same qualifications for promotion
yet was passed on and fired, and a male was offered the job.
Explicit bias is conscious, and we are aware it exists. The firm is aware
that there are issues with how the women are being treated in the firm and
then not committing to change.
2. Analyze the impact of the bias from part A1 on the recipient’s professional
identity and performance.
The bias from part A1 on the recipient's professional identity and
performance made her resentful towards her coworkers. She also felt unheard when
they ignored the memorandum that was given to the firm. The recipient felt like she
was being discriminated against, leading her to negative attitudes toward others
within the firm.
3. Analyze the impact of the bias from part A1 on both the actor’s professional
identity and performance.
The impact of the bias on the actor's professional identity and performance
was negative. The firm was sued yet won a lawsuit. The lawsuit brought negative
attention to the firm as if they had been having gender bias and allowing
discrimination throughout the workplace.
a. Propose one strategy the actor could use to meet their ethical responsibility
in their professional role.
One strategy the actor could use to meet their ethical responsibility in
their professional role is ensuring everyone is treated fairly, regardless of
gender, color, religion, etc.
4. Describe two choices the actor might make as a result of their personal
worldview that could affect their ability to be culturally competent.
One choice the actor can make because of their personal worldview is to
assume their culture and beliefs are universal. This can lead to many stereotypes
