, Languages
The knowledge test is available in English, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish at Driver Service
Centers where computerized testing is offered.
If needed, applicants may use an English translation dictionary during the knowledge test, as long
as there are no written notes within the pages of the book.
If an applicant is deaf, the Department of Safety will provide a certified American Sign Language
interpreter to assist with the administration of an oral exam. Other interpreters are not allowed to
assist with any testing.

Knowledge Test Information
The knowledge test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. Applicants must correctly answer
at least 24 questions to receive a passing score.
Questions are based on information found in sections B and C of the Tennessee Comprehensive
Driver License Manual. Question topics will be divided equally among traffic signs and signals,
safe driving principles, rules of the road, and drugs and alcohol.
The use of personal electronic devices is not allowed during testing.
Knowledge tests are administered using computerized testing machines. Tests are administered
on a first-come, first-served basis.
If an applicant either has a learning disability or cannot read, oral tests are available by
appointment at select Driver License Service Centers.
There is a mandatory 7-day waiting period if the knowledge test is failed and the applicant wishes
to retake the test.

, Top 150 Questions & Answers
1. If you approach an intersection and you are not in the proper lane to make a right or left turn, you
should:

› Continue to the next intersection to make the turn.

You should never try to make a turn from the wrong lane. If you aren’t in the proper lane,
drive to the next intersection and make the turn from the proper lane there. Circle back if
necessary.

2. Changing from one lane to another is best done:

› Gradually and carefully.

You should always change lanes gradually and carefully. Only change lanes when necessary.
Every lane change increases the possibility of a traffic accident.

3. A conviction of driving under the influence (DUI) is determined by a blood alcohol concentration
of:

› 0.08 percent.

Driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent is always illegal in
Tennessee. Drivers under age 21 will face stiff penalties for having a BAC as low as 0.02
percent. It is possible to be convicted of driving under the influence even if your BAC is
below the legal limit.

4. Driving while under the influence of drugs carries:

› The same penalty as driving under the influence of alcohol.

The penalties for driving under the influence are always the same, whether you are driving
under the influence of alcohol or any other drug (including legal medications).

, 5. Emergency crossovers on the interstate in Tennessee are legal to use:

› By emergency vehicles and highway maintenance crews only.

It is illegal in Tennessee for any driver to make a U-turn on an interstate highway.
Emergency crossovers on interstates are for the use of emergency vehicles and highway
maintenance crews only.

6. How far in advance should you signal your intention to turn?

› At least 50 feet.

You must signal your intention to turn by activating your turn signal at least 50 feet before
the location of the desired turn.

7. If the traffic signal turns red while you are in the middle of an intersection waiting to turn left,
you should:

› Complete the turn when traffic clears.

If you are already within an intersection when the light changes from green to yellow, do not
stop. Proceed cautiously, completing the left turn when it is safe to do so. When making a
left turn, you must always yield to oncoming traffic.

8. If you are continually being passed on the right and the left while driving in the center lane of an
expressway, you should:

› Move to the lane on your right.

If a road has four or more lanes with two-way traffic, drive in the right lanes unless you are
passing or turning left. If you are on an interstate highway and are driving below the speed
of the flow of traffic, use the right lane.
