Experiment 5 and 6: How can we build molecules? “Models to the rescue” and VSEPR and
molecular shape “How does it look?”
Introduction:
To observe molecules, it is a must to notice their molecular structures, bond lengths, bond angles,
and crystal structures. In these two labs, we learn to build molecular models of various
compounds. Not only that, but we are also able to investigate shapes of molecules, understand the
factors that determines the preferred shape, and to use the valence-shell electron pair repulsion
model to predict the shapes of the molecules. For lab 5, we will be using the Avogadro program
to build our models and record our data. Meanwhile, in lab 6, we use the WebCSD to build our
models and record required data.
