Why does the SUBJECT physical education exist?

The subject physical education exist because learners need to become aware of their
large and small muscles and derive the satisfaction of making use of it. Modern
equipment and technology have limited the use of physical exhursion.

Physical education involves growth, development and proper physical maintenance
which give the learner to grow mentally, physically and emotionally.

Lastly physical education teaches learners how to utilise apparatus and playground
equipment safely, learn to follow rules, nutrition diets and ways to cope with stress.

1.1.1 DEFINING PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical education is an ancient art of humanity involving various physical tasks to
accomplish goals. The role of the subject is to enhance learners physical fitness and
well-being and teach them a wide variety of motor skills shared through activities and
experience. Physical education improves self-direction, self-esteem and cooperative
behaviour with the help of having some success when participating.

1.2 THE PHILOSOPHY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The philosophy of physical education and sport is that they mean the same thing.
Physical education makes use of skills in sport, dance and exercise where they are
taught and put into practice.

Physical education takes placed in a specialised learning environment that provides
opportunities for physical,social, emotional and intellectual responses.the quality of
education depends on responses and attitudes induced in learners.

In short physical education is a method of educating youth through experience
acquire during motor activities.

1.3 THE TERMINOLGY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

1.3.1 SPORT
Sport is practiced throughout the world from recreation sport to competitive sport. As
a human activity sport involves administrative organisation and rules. Sport is
characterised by rules, common goals, formation of teams or individuals that compete
against each other to win.

, 1.3.2 PLAY
The word play is derived from the Anglo-saxon word plega which means game or
sport. This entails an enjoyable activity in a free andspontaneous way that is not
structured. It is a natural activity.

1.3.3 RECREATION
Recreation is derived from the latin word recreare which means to renew. Recreation
is activities that learners do in the spare time.

1.4 THE AIMS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

• To develop the movement of personalities of each individual to an optimal level.
• To develop a basic understanding and appreciation of human movement.
• To develop skills, knowledge and attitudes, basic to voluntary participation in
satisfying ang enjoyable physical recreation experiences.
• To develop personally rewarding and socially acceptable behaviours through
participation in enjoyable movement activities.
• To develop and maintain optimal individual muscular strength, endurance and
cardiovascular endurance.

1.5 THE VALUE AND PLACE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT FOR
LEARNERS.

Participating in activities gives learners a means of self-expression, they do this by
becoming aware of:
• Shapes the body can make
• Where the body moves
• How the body moves

Learners learn to explore the environment and express their feelings through creative
movement. It provides a release to reduce tension and promote relaxation.

Learners learn about the value of socialising. While providing the opportunity to
develop physically. They also develop the understanding of how to play games and
sports. This develops their cognitive ability.

Learners develop positive attitudes when met with success in sports
