Exam essay term 3
Analysis of intent and theme and its relevance:
The intent and inspiration of this dance work was to showcase the destruction of our planet
and just how many things such as climate change have such a huge impact on us and the
world negatively. Another reason for the creation of this dance is to demonstrate a message
on how just like the seasons of the year, we too change and circumstances are always
arising. Even through these difficult topics, an intention of spreading hope for the future can
also be found. This dance also has a subtle message on how important it is to maintain our
cultures and traditions which helps uphold humanity and individuality.
In our society today we can notice the relevance of these topics. We are currently
experiencing and increase in disease, global warming and pollution and we are mostly to
blame for it. we need to start finding compassion and understanding towards each other if
we are to live better amongst each other. This dance reminds us that we are all human and
we all go through tough, confusing, new and joyful times and to keep ourselves humble. For
those who struggle to remain optimistic, which seems to be more and more of us, this dance
should remind them to remain hopeful. Today our social values can be low, we often get
sucked into trying to be the same as everyone else by creating unrealistic standards. The
fusion of cultural and different dance styles, from African to Latin, is a reminder that in our
society today we should turn away from the idea and it is beautiful and unique to celebrate
our differences and cultures because they are strengths, not flaws.
Analysis of de, cs and mv:
In autumn, contemporary can be seen. The collapsing and swinging movements are heavy
showing how the leaves are helpless against gravity. the few lifts used were unisex. Elements
of jazz can be seen such as isolations, both standing up and in the floorwork. The force of
this scene is heavy and gravitated making the dancers look like leaves falling down off of
trees. By moving through jumps and lifts into low movements and floorwork they show
difference in height. The partner work shows much symmetry and mirror images. The
beginning of this scene starts with dancers joining the stage in canon. A climax is reached
when the duet dances. The scene ends off when group plays with a repetitive push and pull
motif until they spin out and disperse back cross the whole stage. Repetition is seen, such as
collapsing and clapping. The fluidity of the transitions is smooth. The music consists of a
violin and the tempo is slow.
In winter, the tutting style can be seen where patterns are created. Aggressive stomping and
punching are noticed throughout resulting in a sharp and jerky force, and is a form of African
dance. Jazz principles are used such as, isolations, contractions, flexed feet and sharp turns
of direction. The gun gestures induce a sense of fear and incoming death. From beginning to
end, symmetry and mirror images between multiple partners can be seen. the concept of
‘lead and follow’ takes place, when 1 dancer uses his arms to ‘control’ the movement of the
dancers. winter is a very uniform scene due to the repetition of such strong movements,
signalling the isolating mood winter brings. In the beginning of winter, the dancers begin
with pacing heel walks paired with changes in direction. A climax is reached when dancers
begin to scurry and crawl away to seek some sort of ‘refuge’. An ending comes around when
