Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Group Program for Mental Health Promotion of University

Students: Article Analysis

Description and Purpose of the Study

Suicide rates in Korea increased by 9.5% in 2018, leading to an estimated 26.6 out of

100,000 people who died by suicide (Lee & Lee, 2020). The researchers of this study, Lee and

Lee (2020), were interested in analyzing how mental health programs might decrease suicide

rates. The study focuses on post-adolescent college students (ages 20-29); suicide is most

prominent in this age range due to family, routine, and location changes. The study explores the

effects of group cognitive-behavioral programs on depression, self-esteem, and interpersonal

relations among undergraduate students. The researchers hypothesized that depression, self-

esteem, and interpersonal relationship are affected by group and time (Lee & Lee, 2020).

The experiment used a control group of 19 people and an experimental group of 18

people. All participants were required to meet these criteria: they are undergrad students, can

comprehend the presented information, and do not have severe medical or psychiatric illnesses

(e.g., psychotic diagnoses). All participation was voluntary (Lee & Lee, 2020). One week before

the program, a pre-survey was given to participants for general information, including the level

of depression, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. The program included eight two-hour

sessions that discussed cognitive behavior and expression. These session topics included:

understanding the experience and identifying individual characteristics, understanding the

cognitive process, understanding cognitive distortion, reconstruction of cognitive function,

planning interpersonal relationships and activities, applying mental exercise, identifying

cognitive change, and positive self-expression (Lee & Lee, 2020). A post-survey was given a

week after the completion of the program.
