Assignment C, Part 2.2
Essay on using authentic materials and internet
Write a 500-700 word essay in which you:
a) Explain the value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching (See Units 5 and 9 and do your
own research).
b) Say why you feel the text you have chosen would be appropriate for this class and explain the reasons for
your vocabulary selection. If you have adapted your text, explain the rationale for the changes you made in
this section.
c) Say why you feel the activities you have chosen would be appropriate for this class.
d) Comment on the advantages and disadvantages of using the internet for teaching and language
resources. (See Unit 10)

Please write the essay under the four headings given. The sections do not all have to be the same length.

Total word count : 619

a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching

The value of using authentic text is that it allows the advanced students to see the everyday language that is
used in English based cultures. Some articles will challenge students with vocabulary that is difficult, but
imperative to know as it is used in complex reports and articles. Authentic text can vary in topics and styles
of writing which also adds an additional element of learning as native speakers each have their own
cultures within their different communities. This exposure will assist non-native speakers to address formal
and informal language and would assist in the day to day functions such as the correct formal language to
use when emailing an employer, or an informal email being sent to a friend.

b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items

Political based articles are usually off limits as political views could be seen as offensive to someone or
could cause discomfort amongst students. I chose this article as the focus is on the impeachment of the
president where a minimal amount of personal opinion was shown by the journalist, whilst not supporting
any specific political view or agenda. Politics is an in-depth but important aspect of any country. The 12
words were verified off of the vocab kitchen, but I mainly used words that weren’t common everyday words
that are used simply – my aim was to challenge the students as they are more advanced and older and
would have formed a more in-depth understanding of politics and the importance of politics within a
country.

b) Why my activities would be appropriate for this class

The crossword activity is challenging as it challenges the vocabulary that the students have either learnt or
heard before or enlighten them on words, they have never come across in their English learning course or
journey yet. It is a simple, yet challenging activity.

The dictionary quiz is allowing the students to get comfortable with making the decisions around word class
as it forces them to choose the correct definition or use of the word, whilst improving their vocabulary as
the definitions will allow them to understand the meaning behind the word used and will assist in making
more sense of the text given

My activity which I find intense is meant to be challenging. The information on the president’s individual
impeachments is a vast amount of information which would work on their reading skills whilst encouraging
