Elements of Life
Mater- everything that has mass and
takes up space. Solid, liquid, gas and
plasma are the 4 states of matter.
Matter is neither created nor
destroyed but either recycled over and
over. The atoms may have been in a
dinosaur.
The idea that matter cannot be
destroyed but is simply transformed
from one form to another is the
principle of Conservation of Matter.
Water’s Chemistry Facilitates Life
, Water has many unique properties
that make life possible.
It is the universal solvent because it
can bond and dissolve other charged
molecules.
It absorbs a lot of heat before
increasing in temperature, making it
an effective heat buffer.
Ice is less dense than liquid water
causing it to float to the surface and
insulate the lower layers from
freezing.
Properties of Water
Water molecules are polar.
Is liquid at room temperature.
Water molecules are cohesive.
It expands when it crystallizes, and
the solid is less dense than the liquid.
